PARSHAS PINCHAS - פרשת פנחס

"פנחס בן אלעזר בן אהרן הכהן" - "Phinehas son of Eleazar son of Aaron the priest..." (Numbers 25:10)

It is taught that according to Kabballah, that the souls of Nadab and Abihu were reincarnated in Phinehas. The concept of their souls being reincarnated within him is related to the verse that says that they perished "when they came close to the L-RD" (Leviticus 16:1), which means that they offered themselves as a sacrifice to G-d. With his zealous act of bravery, Phinehas also offered himself as a sacrifice to the L-RD, therefore the souls of Nadab and Abihu became incarnated within him. Similarly, all of Tzaddikim are like a sacrifice to the L-RD, for they always sacrifice themselves to G-d. This is the purpose of their deaths. [Despite the fact that the sages teach "before the sun of one has set..." (Talmud: Kiddushin 72b)] That's why it says "therefore I give to him my covenant of peace" (Numbers 25:12). This covenant would remain for generations as long as there was peace, meaning as long as there was no separation between them and the people who remain after them, because then the light of their holiness remains. Shalom - שלום - "peace" is the same letters as moshel - מושל - "ruler". This hints to the fact that the inner life-force spreading out to the 248 limbs and 365 sinews in pious fear of G-d, for that is the inner life-force of the spreading out of pious fear of G-d, as is taught in Sefer Reishis Chochmah. This is the life-force that the tzaddikim pour out to give fear of G-d to those who are attatched to them. Then there will be peace for them. Then they will automatically have sovereignty, which is the concept of the inner life force because of the fear of G-d, that influences them to have the will.

"יפקוד ה' אלקי הרוחות לכל בשר איש על העדה " - "May the L-RD, G-d of the spirits of all flesh, command (yifkod) a man to lead the congregation" (Numbers 27:16)

The man who leads the congregation should understand how much the congregants lack a connection to G-d, and be able to rectify the situation. This is because the word pekidah - פקידה - as in "command a man" - "יפקוד... איש" - is a term which can also refer to lacking.

(Divrei Binah - Parshas Pinchas p. 136)

"הנה אנכי שולח לכם ... והשיב לב אבות על בנים ולב בנים על אבותם" - "And behold I will send you Elijah the prophet... and he will return the hearts of the parents to the children and the hearts of the children to the parents." (Malachi 3:23-24)

The Sages teach that when one begins doing a mitzvah he is told to finish (Yalkut Shimoni - Parshas Mattos). In the beginning of our parshah, we begin with the loftiness of Phinehas, who is Elijah, which represents the goodness of Isaac. Zimri represents the wickedness of Esau. Phinehas kills him because first he was his friend, as is known from the Kabbalistic writings of the Ariza"l, look in Nachal Kedumim as well. The completion of the mitzvah will be when the hearts of the parents will be returned to the children, when the pious fear of Isaac will be united with Jacob. With the unification of fear and love will be the unification of the attributes. This is the meaning of "and he will return the hearts of the parents to the children, and the hearts of the children to the parents."
