PARSHAS V'ESCHANAN - פרשת ואתחנן

"Hear O Israel, the LORD is our God, the LORD is ONE. And you shall love..." - "שמע ישראל ה' אלקנו ה' אחד. ואהבת" (Deuteronomy 6:4-5)

The verse says "Hear O Israel", that you should understand, "the LORD is our God, the LORD is ONE", for he should be because of that our God, like it says "For with a strong hand will I reign over you", for "Echad" - "אחד" - "One", refers to conquering, for "al lechad" - על לחד - "on conquest", is translated as "echad" - אחד, for even if it is against our will, it will be "HASHEM ECHAD" - "ה' אחד" - the Lord will conquer. But why should you wait until you are forced with a strong hand? Would it not be better for you before this conquest that "you should love the LORD your God".

(Divrei Binah - Parshas V'eschanan p. 28)

"HEAR O Israel, the LORD is our God, the LORD is ONE" - "שמע ישראל ה' אלקנו ה' אחד" (Deuteronomy 6:4)

The Sages teach in the Talmud that שמע - "hear" - means that one may fulfill the mitzvah of reciting the Shema "in any language that you hear". This also hints that one must pay attention, listen, and understand, that in every language, in each and every word, and from every word of every language, that you must hear this, (i.e. that you must understand how everything is actually saying "the LORD is our God, the LORD is ONE").
